I may have…
…a semi-green thumb after all. Most of my plants are still alive. I do have a bromeliad that is on life support and two of its pups that are in intensive care. I tried rescuing a fern that was growing through a crack on the side of our stucco steps but it probably would have been better if I left it alone. T was watering the plants one time and he told me, “I prayed for your brown plant.” Well, it was green at one time and it has withered to a brown mess at this point.
My mom had a super green one that she could grow new plants like roses, hibiscus (aka gumamela) and ixora (aka santan) from cuttings. When she was alive our yard was full of fruit trees, flowering plants and orchids. I wish I had her gift.
This morning after dropping T off at school, I worked on the front yard for a little bit transferring the plants I bought at the Uptown farmers market Tuesday. I got a flat of plants for $15…what a deal! And they had Richard Blais and Radhika Desai from Top Chef there doing a demonstration. But that’s another story.
Tilled the soil, mixed some organic garden soil in, planted, mulched and ta-dah! it looked really nice. Mental note: take and post photos. I have yet to decide on what border to use. I would like to use bricks but I am stingy. I could use railroad ties but I am not sure yet. I could do lava rocks I suppose or do a border of liriopes. Maybe I can beg for some from the groundskeeper at work.
