Other Side of the World

Thursday, February 9th, 2006 at 5:34 am

It’s almost 9am, sun is waaay up, and it’s warm and humid but the slight breeze offers some relief. T is eating Cream-O’s, the local version of Oreo’s and he doesn’t seem to taste the difference.

We’ve been in Pinas for over a week now but we aside from trips to nearby places, we haven’t really been exploring. It took a few days before we got over jetlag. T had no problems sleeping though…well, the boy could fall alseep on a sack of rice and wake up feeling refreshed.

The trip seemed longer than I remember. Ay! Sitting for 13 hours is enough to make your hinny numb and number. LOL! T complained about his ears hurting when we were taking off but other than that, he was a very good passenger. The trip was uneventful except for some moments when we experienced turbulence. We were served multi-meals so I kind of felt like I gained weight on that trip alone.

I guess the airport in Nagoya was renovated and there was added security. We had to go through metal detectors and our carry-alls were x-rayed before we were rushed to the terminal. MH only had a few minutes to go in the smoking lounge; I imagined smokers puffing 2 or 3 cigarettes at a time to make up for their nicotine depravity :D. We didn’t even get a chance to look around before we were back in our plane preparing for the last leg of the flight. I would say 90% of the passengers were Pinoys and hearing different dialects spoken heightened my sense of anticipation.

MIA (or NAIA) was the same old airport. Our flight was slightly delayed and we ended up arriving with 5 or 6 other flights at about 10:45pm. Imagine more than a thousand passengers being processed by around 6 immigration officers. Not something you want to experience when you just spent 17 hours in a plane, rumpled, lugging your carry-alls, and trying to assure your cranky and hot boy that we’ll be on our way out soon. Soon turned out to be 1am. We were worried our welcoming party had given up on us but they stayed put and waited. It was good to see them finally.

What have we done so far? Well, MH got new eyeglasses and will have another pair made before we leave. I had my hair cut, colored and streaked. The two…erm…guys at the salon plotted my hair color between themselves. I now have gold and red streaks running through my hair. T didn’t like them at first (and hubby still hasn’t gotten used to them) but he has since proclaimed that he likes it now because I have the same hair as Ronald McDonald. Hmmm… T is experiencing the jeepneys, buses, taxis and even a tricycle ride. His favorite place is Tom’s World in SM where he can play arcade games. He loves the claw thingy and he loves when tickets come out of some of the machines. So far he’s won pencils, a magnetic paper clip holder, Spongebob keyholders, a plastic car and other things I can’t remember anymore. Not that cares about his winnings, he just loved playing and he’ll even put up with the cacophony of noises.

Next week we’re leaving for Bangkok to see my brother and we’ll be staying for 6 days. After that, we’re planning to go to Baguio to cool down, then to Bohol to visit relatives and then to Subic. We’ll see how much we can cram into what’s left of our vacation time. Photos will be posted soon!
