Recommended reading. 
Set in China, the story revolves around Peony, a fifteen-year-old girl who, as tradition dictates, is about to go into an arranged marriage to a man she had never even set eyes on. She is an ardent fan of a book called “The Peony Pavilion” and is thrilled when he father invites important people to their villa and part of the festivities include an opera based on the book to be performed in their villa. It is during the festivities that she meets a man whom she falls in love with. Without her realizing it, she starves herself to death (pining for the man she loves but knowing that she cannot go against her family’s wishes) but her story doesn’t end with her demise. Her “life” goes on even after death claims her.
