Destrehan Plantation

Today was the start of the Destrehan Plantation Spring Arts & Crafts Festival.

It was just starting to get busy when we got there and after a few minutes of looking around we headed for the food tents. We all skipped breakfast so we were starving by that time. MH had blackened chicken with creole veggies on a pita bread, MIL had bayou salad, I had cajun stew over dirty rice, and T had a softshell crab po-boy with fries. There were picnic tables set out but it had started to rain so everyone ate on their feet, so to speak.

By the time we were done, the rain had stopped and we were able to explore some more. The vendors’ various wares were all reasonably priced even in the antiques barn. There was a cabin where open hearth cooking was being done. It was filled with the aroma of simmering red beans, sausage and cornbread. A few cabins down was a display and demonstration of bousillage construction, the method used to build the plantation. Of course a big hit with T was the Euro Bungy which is essentially like jumping on a trampoline except you have a harness on.

MIL bought me a couple of bromeliads which we hope will still be alive and thriving when she visits us again. She also got MH a piece of decorative wrought iron from the antique shop. T got his face painted and bought a pingpong ball gun. When we finally made our way back to the car it started raining again.

An hour after we arrived home we get a call from the Plantation to let us know T won a raffle prize. It was a $25 gift certificate at their gift shop. He was soooo excited because he said has never won anything. We’ll have to make another trip sometime soon to claim it.

Got something to say?
